Google Foobar is one of the hiring process used by Google to recruit some of the best developers around the globe which they think can be a good match for their organization. There are 5 levels of challenges with increasing difficulty. I am sure you must have already known about Google Foobar challenges prior to reading this article. If you haven’t , do check out this post FOOBAR. The main aim of this article is to demonstrate how I got into Foobar with an email.

How Foobar Challenge normally occurs

Most of the Foobar Challenge comes up on someone’s browser when he/she searches some words/phrases related to programming. For eg:- it’s known that while searching for “Mutex Lock” ,“Python list comprehensions”, or “headless chrome” , the browser window splited with the following message:

Not everyone who searches for programming queries get Foobar Challenge. No one knows the algorithm behind it except Google. However, there’s a notion that it may be based on user’s search history or any technical keywords. People also think that after performing a number of search iterations of a technical keyword on Google Homepage, one gets invited. Although this was not on my case, I believe that our complete Google activity plays a greater role to get an invitation.

How I got into Foobar

For me, it was just a simple email. YESS!! You heard that right. After knowing about Foobar, I simply opened it’s official website http://foobar.withgoogle.com/ which landed me to the following page.

Thereafter, I clicked Contact Us section which provided me with the email:

foobar-help@gmail.com

I simply emailed the team that I was not able to access Google-Foobar Challenge and requested them to help me on this matter.

After 16 days, I received the following message.

While I got the unique and confidential link to the challenge, I would also like to point out one more thing. The team stated that they are currently working towards a long-term solution. To be frank, I don’t know what long-term solution they were trying to tell.

After visiting the link, as usual, I entered into the website that looked like UNIX command embedded interface. Although I didn’t take pics from beginning to end, I managed to take a few from my mobile and few screenshots. How Foobar Challenge normally occurs !

After completing Level 2, I got another referral link which I gave it to my friend. (Picture screenshoted )

After completing Level 3, Foobar asked me to share my solutions with a Google Recruiter. I gave all of my details: Name, Phone Number, Country, Profession, and other helpful personal links.

Currently, I am in Level 4. I have heard that Level 4 and 5 are really challenging, so I have thought to give plenty of time for them without hassle.

So, this was my story on how I got into Foobar Challenge with a single email. I don’t know if Google still provides the link for the Foobar with that method, but it’s definitely worth a try. Also, I have heard that Google has stopped hiring developers through Foobar, but haven’t found any evidence for it. Regardless of getting a job at Google or not, trying for Foobar has a lot of advantages which are enlisted hereby within:-

a) We will learn new stuffs at every level. At the end, everyone will get to learn something regardless of seniority.

b) It’s a chance to experiment our knowledge.

c) Although getting an invitation is itself an accomplishment, solving problems provide more satisfaction.

d) A chance to demonstrate our knowledge to Google recruiters which might open door to new opportunities.
